Ryan Abel was born and raised in Maryland, and is a graduate of the University of Maryland. He met his wife, Ruth, at their home church there, and they were married in 2009. They moved to Memphis in 2012 where Ryan earned an M.A. in Urban Education, and has taught and administrated in local public schools, most recently joining a team to launch a brand-new charter in Frayser.
Ryan and Ruth have two children. Leilani, who is nearly 7, is a spunky 1st grader who is discovering a love of reading, baking and crafting, and Ezra, who is excited to be turning 4, is an avid mess maker, dinosaur fighter, and matchbox car driver.
Ryan first became connected to Kymone via Twitter, where they discovered a mutual interest in church planting. Their similar views on the importance of bringing church along the path of life led Ryan to join the ministry of Journey. He brings with him over a decade of experience in youth and college ministry, and a lot of enthusiasm.
Sylvia was born in Memphis and moved to Los Angeles, California when she was just a toddler. She attended college in Alabama where she met her husband Greg, and after they got married they moved back to Memphis to continue their education.
Sylvia and Greg have been married for 27 years, and have 2 boys and 3 girls. 2 are in college, 1 is in highschool, 1 is in middle school and 1 is in elementary school. Sylvia has been a homeschool mom for about 15 years!
Sylvia and Greg felt the Lord calling their family to serve Him in a new way when they became involved with Journey. They believe that the mission and method of Journey is they way the Lord wants to use them to share the good news of Jesus’ love and grace.
Shahid grew up with a little brother and two sisters in Cordova, just steps outside Memphis, Tennessee. His mother is from Kenya but his father is a native Memphian. He felt God calling him to serve and fellowship with Journey and is growing in leadership. He enjoys art in many forms and has a passion for music. His big dream is to one day create a platform for positive music that inspires others.
Adam grew up in Henderson, Tennessee which is about 90 miles east of Memphis. He and his wife Neely have been married for 6 years and moved to Memphis when Neely started law school.
During the work day, Adam is a financial analyst, but in their free time, he and Neely enjoy board games and playing cards, entertaining friends, as well as trying new foods or catching favorite home renovation shows on TV. The only thing that knocks Adam out of his mild-mannered groove is traffic, and he is just a little bit obsessed with new trucks.
Adam became involved with Journey because of the irresistible persuasion of another member, Errol Harris. He and Neely just couldn’t say “no” to him, and we are glad that they didn’t!
